COMMUNITY COALITIONS – "The State of Black America" Greenburgh, NY

New York chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. came together to organize and sponsor Greenburgh, New York's "State of Black America Forum".

Close to 100 residents attended the town hall meeting to hear a panel of speakers including an acting Supreme Court justice, a teacher and a local legislator, discuss how best to address the hardships African Americans in Westchester County face as a result of lingering racism and inequality. The forum was conceived after a number of fraternity and sorority members were inspired to join the Covenant with Black America movement.

Those involved in organizing the meeting challenged attendees to talk about the issues, reflect on their own situations and demand change. The forum was meant to spark local activism and political involvement during this election year. County Legislator Andrea Stewart-Cousins summed it up by saying "without that constant feedback and interaction, you can’t possibly expect leaders to lead properly."
